Best live music events 2/9 - 2/14: at a glance

Bruise Cruise Kickoff, featuring Fucked Up, Thee Oh Sees, Blowfly, King Khan and the Shrines and others.

Where: The Stage

170 NE 38th St Miami Fl 33137

When: Wednesday-Thursday, Feb. 8 and 9 at 7 PM.

Cost: Two day passes cost $20

The madness that precedes the three day Bruise Cruise extravaganza had to be split in two due to the exorbitant runtime of last year’s show, but for those of you looking for an old-fashioned raucous Garage Punk show with out of control shredding, and a highly probability of moshing and crowd surfing, look no further than this event happening at The Stage. Fucked Up and Thee Oh Sees merit the price of admission alone, and they are sure to drop and energetic set on a highly enthused crowd: probably the best value of the month, to be certain.

Zola Jesus

When: Thursday, Feb. 9, doors open 9 PM.

Where: Bardot

3456 North Miami Ave, Miami FL

Cost: $15 general admission

With the release of her third LP, “Conatus,” classically-trained songstress Nika Rosa Danilova, known widely by her stage name, Zola Jesus, made a huge step forward sonically (incidentally, the album title literally means “moving forward in Latin), bringing in session musicians to accompany her music for the first time, giving her compositions – which were typically accompanied by a drum machine and synths – a new acoustic element. Nonetheless, as is the case with all of her songs, the one cohesive element that gives way through the markedly Gothic flourishes of her music is her booming operatic voice, that never fails to convey so many emotions in a single sweep. “Conatus” brought Zola Jesus widespread acclaim, and is one my favorite albums of 2011. Bardot provides the perfect backdrop for such an enigmatic figure – it’s sure to be a bared-down and intimate affair that should not be missed.

Com Truise

Where: Bardot

3456 North Miami Ave, Miami FL

When: Saturday, Feb. 11, doors open at 9 PM.

Cost: $17 general admission.

Hailing from Princeton, New Jersey, Seth Haley - who performs under the stage name of Com Truise specializes in blend of Electronica that is absolutely drenched in Synths. I mean, just have a listen to his full-length debut "Galactic Melt"to have a firm understanding of exactly what I mean - it sounds a lot like the sort of work that Vangelis contributed to the "Blade Runner" soundtrack back in the 80's. Many pundits have attempted to loop him into the Chillwave movement that has come to encompass the likes of Twin Shadow, Neon Indian and Toro Y Moi (all of whom have played Bardot, incidentally) - but his heavy reliance on the synthesizer, which is essentially the extent of the instrumentation in his music seems to be more indicative of Synth-Pop. His vibrant soundscapes are strikingly atmospheric and vibrant in the manner in which they seem to evoke a feeling of serenity. This is probably going to be one of the best downtempo performances happening this month.

Diplo and Sleigh Bells

Where: Grand Central

697 N Miami Ave  Miami, FL

When: 2/14, doors open at 9 PM

Cost: $25, presale

One of the hottest producers in the game, and a prominent player in the commercialization of the EDM genre, Diplo has succeeded in melding the energetic beats and throbbing synth hooks of contemporary House productions with marketable singles such as last year's breakout hit, "Look at Me Now," with Chris Brown, featuring appearances from Lil' Wayne and Busta Rhymes. Diplo's collaborations with M.I.A on her album "Kala," and more recently, her self-titled release brought an element of polished danceability to M.I.A's politically-charged rhymes. His personal imprint, Mad Decent, has been responsible for bringing superstar Dubstep DJ and producer, Rusko, to mainstream attention following the release of his breakout LP "OMG," and the single "Cockney Thug." Sleigh Bells is a Noise Pop duo based in Brooklyn, New York, which feature former Poison the Well guitarist Derek E. Miller, and vocalist Alexis Krauss. Their debut 2010 LP, "Treats" was one of the unsung triumphs of the year, garnering relatively universal acclaim, and producing the infectious singles "Infinity Guitars" and "Rill Rill." The date of their performance at Grand Central coincides with the release date of their sophomore album "Reign of Terror," so one can only assume that the band is going to pull out all the stops in making this a raucous performance - not to mention, both acts have strong ties to South Florida - making this a homecoming of sorts.
