At the end of a long work day, sometimes the last thing you want to do is cook dinner for a house full of hungry (and possibly picky) kids. But going out doesn’t mean you want your kids limited to a hamburger and French fries. While Portage is known for having more than its fair share of fast food establishments, there are restaurants in the city that offer a variety of foods on their kids’ menus, even with some healthy options.
Culver’s, located at 6139 U.S. Hwy 6, may not be a far cry from the traditional fast food fare of nearby McDonald’s, but it offers many more choices for kids. Besides the standard Butter Burger, the kids’ menu also features a corn dog, chicken tenders, grilled cheese and hot dog. Not bad for a restaurant with a drive thru. Although all the meals come with fries, you can substitute applesauce for a healthier side and you can opt for milk instead of a soft drink.
While Texas Corral, 5880 U.S. Hwy 6, also includes the standard burger and hot dog on its kids’ menu, it also includes the kid standards of grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese and chicken strips. For kids looking for a more adult meal, the Buckaroo Steak, Spaghetti and Sauce and L’il Buck Salad offer smaller versions of grown up entrees. All kids’ meals come with steak fries and a beverage.
For parents looking for healthy options as well as variety for their kids, LongHorn Steakhouse, 1650 Olmstead Drive, is probably your best bet in the city. Like the previous restaurants, its kids’ menu also includes a hamburger, chicken tenders, mac and cheese, grilled cheese and a hot dog, but it also offers some entrees you won’t likely find for kids anywhere else in Portage. For something a little healthier and a little different, kids can choose from the Grilled Chicken Tenders with Veggies, Grilled Chicken Salad and Kid’s Sirloin. All of LongHorn’s kids entrees come with fresh fruit, fries (unless another side is already listed) and a drink.
