Best karaoke bars in Los Angeles

No matter what day of the week it is, there is always a place in LA where you can sing your heart away.

Karaoke bars are a fabulous idea for first date encounters. It makes things a lot less awkward when you have the option of commenting on bad or great karaoke singers whenever there is a lull in conversation. Karaoke bars are also a great idea for group dates. In fact, when it comes to karaoke bars, the more the merrier as long you each get to sing a few songs, right?

The problem with some karaoke bars, however, is that they sometimes get way too crowded and you'll be lucky to sing even just one song while other karaoke bars have a shortage of singers and not enough entertainment if you are more of a spectator than a participator. But then again, this also depends on when you show up or how many drinks (or bill$) you slip over to the Karaoke Jockey.

Whatever the case, whether your looking for best date ideas or can't seem to get enough of karaoke, here are a few karaoke hotspots where you can enjoy seven nights of karaoke heaven from some of the best karaoke bars in Los Angeles:

1. The Gaslite | 2030 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90403 | Tel: 310-829-2382 | Website:

Elle Magazine raves about this "world famous" karaoke bar for its cozy atmosphere and friendly crowd ranging from locals and college students to professionals and celebrities. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of running into my favorite author and celebrity journalist, Neil Strauss. It's small dive bar with very club-like feel to it, especially later in the evening when it starts to get packed and the drinks have been flowing.

2. Brass Monkey | 3440 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90005 | Tel: 213-381-7047 | Website:

This is supposedly the place where you can "unleash your monkey". Neil Strauss was the one who actually told me about the place, saying that it got a lot "crazier" than The Gaslite. He definitely made this place sound as fun as it looks. Celebrities like Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Ben Stiller (Meet The Parents), Seth McFarlane (Family Guy) and Courtney Cox (Friends) have been known to rock out on the Brass Monkey stage. The best part about this place is that you can view their song book online and make your song selections ahead of time. You might even be able to use your smart phone if you don't feel like crowding around a song book with a bunch of strangers.

3. Sardos | 259 N. Pass Ave., Burbank, CA 91505 | Tel: 818-846-8127 | Website:

Karaoke night is every night just like The Gaslite and Brass Monkey, but this karaoke bar has one thing that the others do not--Porn Star Karaoke. Every Tuesday night, members of the adult entertainment industry let loose after a long hard day at work. It started almost 10 years ago with a few industry friends. The next thing you know, more industry friends were showing up and before long Tuesday nights became known as Porn Star Karaoke night. According to their Yahoo group page: "We get drunk and entertain each other in any way that the law will permit, all loosely disguised as karaoke night."

4. Boardwalk 11 | 10433 National Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034 | Tel: 310-837-5245 | Website:

Praised by Los Angeles Magazine and Maxim as one of the best bars in LA, this place appears to be so popular that there is supposedly $10 cover to get in or at least a two drink minimum. It's probably cheaper just to pay the cover, but we all know some of us need that good ole liquid courage to get us amped enough to belt out our favorite tunes on stage. They have a selection of over 50,000 songs to choose from and signature drinks that will give you all the liquid courage you need for a good night. They also have a great beer selection.

5. The Backstage | 10400 Culver Blvd. Culver City, CA 90232 | Tel: 310-839-3892 | Website:

This dive bar offers karaoke only three nights a week on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting at 8 p.m., but there is never a cover or drink minimum to get in or to participate like the Boardwalk 11 is said to have. Oh, and the bar food is so good that it is definitely be worth yelping about.

6. The Good Nite | 10721 Burbank Ave., North Hollywood, CA 91601 | Tel: 323-899-3366 | Website:

For a good night every night of the week, head on over to The Good Night karaoke bar where you can score $3 cocktails before 11 p.m. This place is said to have some pretty good drink specials and a stripper pole for when you've had one too many. They supposedly make their drinks pretty stiff, so plan ahead by designating a sober driver.

7. Dimples Showcase | 3413 West Olive Avenue, Burbank, CA 91505 | Tel: 818-842-2336 | Website:

Located across from NBC and Warner Bros. Studio, Dimples Showcase is said to be the first karaoke bar in America setting the trend for future karaoke bars since 1982. Karaoke is every night and hosted by seven different beautiful women. This celebrity karaoke bar has seen the likes of Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Kiefer Sutherland, Tori Spelling, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron among many others. Beware of the live video feed you can probably watch online during peak karaoke hours.

8. (BONUS) Max Karaoke Studio | 2130 Sawtelle Blvd. Ste. 101, Los Angeles, CA 90025 | 310-479-1477 | Website:

Since karaoke bars may be a little intimidating for the shy or timid karaoke singer, you do have the option to rent a small room at a karaoke studio where you can sing karaoke in a more intimate setting rather than at a public bar. There are at least three studios in the Los Angeles area so check out their website to find the one nearest you if this sounds more up your alley.

No matter what day of the week it is, take comfort in knowing that you will always have a place to sing your heart away. There are literally dozens of other karaoke bars in Los Angeles, but these ones are definitely worth checking out as they are among the best.
