Best inn rooms for romance on Valentine's Day and beyond (Photos)

As a B&B expert, I’m often asked about the most indulgent and romantic getaways. This seems to be the burning question especially on Valentine’s Day. Quite honestly, you’ll find romance in every inn you choose. They are simply more intimate given the unique surroundings and haute hospitality. However, When it comes to showing the one you love that nothing is too good for him or her, choose one of these very special hideaways at inns within an easy getaway from Boston and win your Valentine's awe with a fabulous stay.

Room 11, Berry Manor Inn, Rockland, ME: Earth tones of balsam green, camel and wine dominate the hues in this luxury room. The king-sized bed is crowned with a corona canopy and draped in panels of gold and wine. A small sitting area with a large flat screen television is located in front of the fireplace. The large en-suite luxury bath features an oversized side-by-side whirlpool tub for two and a custom tiled two person body jet shower. Pick your water pleasure, you’ll find it here. Top it all off with freshly baked pie and ice cream served every night and you have one over-the-top adventure in this Midcoast Maine town. Info: www.berrymanorinn.com . Nearby, the Berry Manor Inn’s three fellow members of Historic Inns of Rockland each offer romantic alternatives.

Yorkshire Room, Manor on Golden Pond, Holderness, NH: I love this room, especially in the warmer months when the large private balcony overlooking gorgeous views of Squam Lake (where they filmed On Golden Pond) offers plenty of cushiony chaise lounges, perfect for an evening glass of wine. In the fall, the views from the room and balcony are spectacular. In addition, the king bed, double whirlpool bath, flatscreen TV, and fireplace make this room very romantic. Take in a couples massage at the inn’s spa, enjoy a candlelight dinner fireside in the dining room, and a drink prior to that in the tavern. Info: www.manorongoldenpond.com.

Dream Cottage at Sugar Hill Inn, Sugar Hill, NH: This stand-alone bungalow is appropriately named, capturing the views of Mt. Lafayette and Cannon Mountain from the front porch. French doors lead out to a private deck and porch swing for quiet conversations together. Inside, the drama unfolds with a cathedral ceiling, wood beams, huge stone fireplace and wide plank Eastern Pine floors. The cottage features original oil paintings by local artist Patricia F. Klinefelter and a 19th Century book collection. The bathroom is your own private spa. The over-sized shower with multiple shower heads and body sprays is the perfect prelude to the private sauna. Ladle water over the hot rocks for just the right amount of steam. Finish your spa treatment with a leisurely soak in the whirlpool for two. View the fire by opening the window to the living room. The tub features programmable jets and soothing chromatherapy. You’ll melt together watching the flickering flames of the fireplace from the king size bed or bath. Radiant heat will keep your toes warm and the flat screen TV with DVD player, Nespresso Espresso Maker, Bose Music System, mini-fridge and microwave are all ready for that private celebration. The Baxter Room at Captain Jefferd’s Inn, Kennebunkport, ME: Located in the inn’s Car5riage House, Baxter is a newly renovated rustic chic room. Inspired by Maine’s hunting camps, but with a nod toward neuveax, this room offers a unique kind size bed with picket-fence inspired theme. The gas fireplace adds a wonderful romantic touch. The large two-person whirlpool tub is surrounded by a mural taking you into Maine’s woods, and the terra-cotta tiled shower is a nice addition too. For true privacy, this room has its own private entrance and screened in porch, ideal in the warmer months. Info: www.captainjefferdsinn.com.

The Charter Oak Cottage at Winvian, Litchfield Hills, CT: A combination of resort and luxe retreat, Winvian is a collection of themed cottages, each offering over-the-top opportunities for romance. The highlight of the Charter Oak Cottage is an imposing oak tree reminiscent of the tree that hid Connecticut’s charger during the Revolutionary period. Push a button and an enormous flat screen TV appears silently from a cabinet at the foot of the bed. Retreat to the shower room, big enough to host a party of ten, yet intimate enough for a playful water fight with its multiple shower jets. A large living room with a stocked bar area top things off, a screened in porch accessed up the silo stairs is a lovely hangout for morning coffee and a five-star dining room and fabulous breakfast the next morning top this retreat off making it tops for haute harmony. Luxury Suite at Clarendon Square Inn, Boston, MA: Here is one of my favorite places to stay when in Boston. This welcoming brownstone just steps from Clarendon Square in downtown Boston offers a central location for catching the sights and sounds of the city. Boston residents like to choose this for their staycations, and those coming to visit the city love the central location. The Luxury Suite here becomes your own apartment-sized hideaway, complete with a view of the city, full living room, marble fireplace and large flat-screen TV. The unusual twelve-foot mahogany barrel-vaulted dressing room unfolds to a bath with a soaking tub for two and an 8-foot walk-in shower with dual heads.
