Pacific Palisades, CA- This trail is every bit as woodsy and secluded as its name suggests. The Camp Josepho Trail in Rustic Canyon is a hidden gem located in the Pacific Palisades section of the Santa Monica Mountains. Rustic Canyon provides hikers with a wild, narrow and steep terrain with dramatic rock walls.
This hike can be challenging due to the 900ft of elevation gain, but the amazing scenery provides you incentive to keep going strong. The hike starts out from Sullivan Fire Road which is a paved road that will lead you to Rustic Canyon Trail. If you look closely along the trail, you will find a flight of cement stairs that will lead you to the bottom of the canyon. If you are trying to conquer this trail on bike, then continue on till you reach the peak of this trail. If you found the stairs, you will then find yourself on a section of the trail with lovely meadow like areas shaded by giant sycamores. When you reach the scout camp, turn around and back head down Rustic Canyon. As the canyon narrows, the woods get quite dense and at times the trail disappears, forcing you to walk in the stream bed. Watch for an obvious trail to the right once the canyon flattens out again, leading back to Will Rogers Park.
