Best deals on wireless service: Comparing Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T

When Verizon announced the "More Everything" plan, that meant T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon had all made substantial changes to their plans in 2014. Now AT&T wants to expand their operations in Europe, as WSJOnline.com reported on March 17. AT&T is considering a bid for former Verizon affiliate Vodaphone. Both T-Mobile and Verizon have added free overseas texts to plans recently, while T-Mobile also offers free data usage outside the U.S.

This is a good time to compare the services the four major U.S. carriers are offering at home. Here are highlights of the latest plans from each of the big four U.S. carriers.

Verizon and AT&T are the carriers with coverage in the most locations and they cost more; however, there are different options for families and different discounts at each carrier so buyers need to compare pricing based on the services they will use.

Verizon is clearly the provider with the most 4G coverage (fourth generation service with the fastest speeds) in the most places, with AT&T second. Take a hard look at the coverage maps Verizon shows for the other carriers within Verizon ads and you'll see that only 4G coverage is displayed; your phone will work in 3G (third generation) service areas and that may be all you need in locations you rarely visit. The lower-tier carriers do have 3G and even 2G coverage in some of the places that show as blank on the maps in the Verizon ads.
