Best Coast at the Clubhouse 1/22/11

Best Coast played at the Clubhouse last Sunday, on the second night of their 27-day national tour. Singer/guitarist Bethany Cosentino was in high spirits compared to the band’s November performance at the Rhythm Room. She joyfully talked about karaoke, her cat, and urged guitarist Bobb Bruno to speak after a fan asked why he never talks. He said “hi” and introduced “When the Sun Don’t Shine.” Cosentino encouraged fans to chat with him after the show because when they’re on stage, the band is “all business up here.”

Perhaps taking a cue from their last Phoenix show, when faced with tuning issues, Cosentino asked, “do you really care if it’s in tune?” and covered “Fist City” by Loretta Lynn. Bruno sat at the base of the drum set, “because it’s very country to sit down.” Although the idea of Best Coast playing a country song is odd, they did it quite well, indicating potential for musical growth.

The audience was energetic for the first half of Best Coast’s set, but began to lose momentum after “Boyfriend.” The songs from Summer is Forever, the new seven-inch split with Wavves, were not well received. Maybe Best Coast will have more luck once fans know these songs well enough to sing along. Most will have to wait for a digital release because there are only 1,500 pressings of this record available. Bruno said they sell a limited amount at each show, “or else they’d sell out right away.”

Their 19-song set ended with “When You Wake Up.” Cosentino thanked the audience and walked off stage. After a few seconds of silence and no encore cheers, the house lights came on and a Clubhouse staff member encouraged fans that still wanted to drink to go next door to The Horse and Hound.

Judging from the picture I took of their setlist, if they played an encore, they’d close with “Our Deal”, “That’s the Way Boys Are” and “When I’m With You”. Earlier, Cosentino told the audience “’Our Deal’ would come soon.
