This year was marked with plenty of memorable moments in social media from Miley Cyrus tongue twisting to twerking to funny micro videos from Vine and Instagram. A short video clip analysis by Allison McNamara posted December 10 2013 explained who were the celebrities that stood out and ruled in social media.

Facebook continued to lead the rest of the pack while Twitter went public. In addition, Pinterest did not slow down in terms of user growth or engagement; it remains an important portal in social commerce.

Instagram became a success with its integration of short video clips and Vine certainly made plenty of noise on its own.

Who ruled the social media sphere this year?

Nicole Richie had a dazzling year and plenty of sense of humor noted throughout her posts this year. Beyonce shared plenty of happenings about exotic locations she visited and released her fifth studio album that became the most downloaded in iTunes this year.

Cara Delevigne kept things simple, kept it real when she shared with the public. Lauren Conrad utilized plenty of filters and took plenty of pictures of her dog. Moreover Alexa Chung knows how to deliver good humor and glamour.

Rihanna had quite the social media year with product launches and well-known collaborations with other artists. Fashion blogger Aimee Song had everyone turn most of us into suckers because of the type of outfits she shared with her followers.

Harry Styles-One Direction singer and award winner of the British Fashion Icon award-also enjoyed plenty of engagement with social media fans. Miley Cyrus was possibly the most controversial icon for 2013 thanks to her twerking antics at the Video Music Awards.

Finally, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley-British model and actress-shared plenty of up close and personal images on social media.

The year 2013 had plenty of memorable social media events that sparked the masses and generated plenty to talk about. The new year is bound to reveal maybe more of the same and more excitement around social media usage.
