Best Buy's Muslim holiday boo-boo makes bloggers see red, white and blue

What? No Happy Thanksgiving? You just want us to shop that day?

When Best Buy printed “Happy Eid al-Adha” on its Thanksgiving holiday advertising circular, it caused a PR firestorm at corporate and an avalanche of good 'ole American anger in cyberspace.

If the Net could light up like phone banks of yesteryear, the Earth would have been flashing like a disco ball. Bloggers went berserk, as the news went "viral," similar to the old school phrase, "going postal."

What was the big deal? Best Buy merely wished American Muslims a happy Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, which happens to fall during the Thanksgiving holiday this year.

Problem was, Best Buy forgot to say, “Happy Thanksgiving,” a glaring oversight caught by Daisy at chicksontheright.com.  Majordawg agreed. “Eid, as it is called by many Muslims, is a huge deal for them. However, so is Thanksgiving for us. It seems that alternate celebrations are taking precedent over more mainstream ones (in America)."

LKUK62 went even further: “I’m tired of seeing the rights of our predominantly Christian nation being chipped away, and the rights of minority religions taking precedence. I’m not denying them their freedom to celebrate or worship as they please – by no means! But why do we displace our rights and practices in favor of theirs?"

The Muslim Eid al-Adha feast honors the Koran story of Ibrahim, who is willing to sacrifice his son to display his obedience to God. A voice from heaven stops Ibrahim and tells him to kill a ram instead, a story strikingly similar to the Bible story of Abraham.

To honor God and Ibrahim's sacrifice, during the 3-day feast, American Muslim families eat less than half of their meals, sharing the rest with family and friends and donating some to the poor, just as many generous Americans choose to deliver free Thanksgiving dinners, work at soup kitchens or donate food to their local shelters during this time of year.

Despite obvious similarities to Christianity, the anti-Muslim-holiday vitriol continued at chicksontheright.com. Finally John, a American combat soldier in Farah, Afghanistan, lost his cool with blogger, Daisy.

“The world is full of ignorant, intolerant Muslim assholes, yes, but I’m sure if Best Buy wished everyone well on a Buddhist or Hindu holiday, you probably wouldn’t take issue with it, right? There are tons of people in America and Iraq who are good Muslims. They put their lives on the line; they fight and bleed with us. So take your xenophobic, prejudiced hatred and shove it up your fat, patriotic rear end!”

Perhaps John didn't know that flowers are still fresh on the graves of 13 American soldiers at Ft. Hood who were gunned down by a Muslim jihadist who might have been stopped, if not for the extreme political correctness we show American Muslims. Doug told him.

“In case you haven’t read the news lately, John, we’re being shot at here too, soldier. Only we’re prohibited from shooting back. So excuse our ‘intolerance.’ Respect.”

John replied, “Doug, I’m not so PC that I can’t call that rotten SOB who murdered soldiers preparing for deployment at Ft Hood a damn terrorist, because that’s what he is. But the fact remains, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish the mission here in Afghanistan if it weren’t for the Muslim Pashtu and Dari linguists who come and work by our sides in country. Moderate American Muslims who stand up and do their duty are being maligned and ridiculed by our citizens’ vitriolic ignorance. I think it’s disgusting that all references to (Christian) Deity in our own country are being torn down. But what are you accomplishing by relegating other faiths to the exact same treatment? "

Daisy responded, “John, simmer. My point was that Best Buy did not say, “Happy Thanksgiving.” They only said, “Happy Eid al-Adha.” There is an obvious imbalance here – one that I find disturbing and increasing in our society today. It makes me wonder, what is happening to our American traditions? This is Thanksgiving week, can we not just say, “Happy Thanksgiving?" No, we can’t, because if we don’t account for every other holiday under the sun and downplay the Christian ones, we risk being called xenophobic, prejudiced fat asses by the politically correct elite.”

“And John, thank you very much for your service to our country.”

Soldier John regained his manners and composure. “Mrs. Daisy, please accept my humble apologies for the knee-jerk reaction to your post. Some of us here have been catching up on news while waiting for 2 days in a dusty pax terminal to go on leave. For all I know, you are a very lovely, sweet and honest lady, fit and healthy, and I apologize for the manner of my response.”

“You have a valid point. My frustration wasn’t so much at the ad itself, but with some of the responses to it. Responses like, “How dare they acknowledge a Muslim/Hindu/Jewish holiday on a Thanksgiving ad?” really irritate me. It’s offensive to those of us who have been touched by the hospitality of so many Muslims here.”

“That being said, I do understand the point you are trying to make. I find the de-Christmas-izing and the PC-ness of the MSM deplorable. We should also be concerned with the insatiable consumerism and ingratitude being associated with Thanksgiving and Christmas, denigrating the true spirit embodied in these American holidays.”

“Thank you for your support. I can’t even begin to say how heart-warming it is to get letters and packages from people I don’t even know. Whenever we lose morale over here, it’s because we’ve lost faith (temporarily) that America is a land worth fighting for, and because we don’t have the resources or the clout to accomplish the mission. Support from people like you and countless others across the heartland reaffirms for us that America is still a shining beauty.”

“God help the politicians and bastards in Washington, should they deliberately lead Her astray, and God bless you, Daisy.” ~ John – 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Farah, Afghanistan.

Bloggers began commenting on the amazing discussion that had unfolded right before their eyes. Each thanked John for his service and his contribution. The groundswell changed from blood-boiling red, to a decidedly patriotic red, white and blue.

Daisy finally wrote back: “John, apology accepted. And, for the record, my ass is kind of Rubenesque at the moment, because I’m seven and a half months pregnant!”

“I was touched by your response. My respect for what you do, that allows me the freedom to express my opinions from the warmth of my home, outweighs our ability to agree or disagree about a Best Buy ad. I probably didn’t state it well, but my irritation stems entirely from sadness, a true sadness, that our country is losing its strength and heritage every time we apologize for or downplay our own traditions and put others before them. Recognition and preservation of everyone’s individual cultures is one thing. But the continued exclusion of our traditions for the sake of political correctness is another. I think we all lose when that happens; it makes us weak both as a nation, and as a melting pot of diverse people.”

“Speaking of which, I wish people would freakin’ melt already! I don’t know one American who isn’t a mutt of some sort. We’re all Americans, and therefore, I believe we should all embrace the American culture. When we start feeling as though being American is something we have to apologize for, then our culture erodes from the inside out. And that erosion affects all of us, even your efforts overseas.”

“Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Get home safe and soon.” ~ Daisy

From Muslim firestorms to melting pots brimming with patriotic pride, this Thanksgiving seems the right time to thank God and our Founding Fathers for the free speech that makes us bleed red, white and blue.

Best Buy is thinking Next Year no one will remember.

Yes we will Best Buy. It WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN. As others have said.....I'm sayin "Bye-Bye to Best Buy". I don't care how low your Prices go. We DO have other Options.

  • Chick 2 years ago

    Hey Bro Steve

You're right. But the muslims have been fighting and Killing since day one. First they killed each other til they converted the survivors by the sword. Then they killed raped and pillaged into North Africa, All the Mideast into Afghanistan and India and beyond. Then into Spain and they tried to go into France but were stopped. ALL of this by way of VIOLENCE and ALL of the violence in the name of their god allah.

In short islam has been at war with the West for as long as there has been an islam. Today is just a continuation of all of that. TEACH your kids the Truth. They won't get it from our public schools. Muslims DON'T LIKE YOU. Wake up America.

Oh and Best Buy....you crossed the line you should NEVER have crossed. I and my family are sayin'Bye_Bye.

I am extremely disheartened with the direction of America at this point. Best Buy's exclusion only make me cling to my Bible,my family and my ( dare I say) guns even tighter and my support for our troops is undying, They say it was an oversite, I say American culture is beginning to be an oversight , all to keep from "offending" select people ( including the president apparantly) The time has come for Americans to make a stand for OUR traditions and customs...Happy Thanksgiving and Merry CHRISTMAS.

  • Christmas/ yes 2 years ago

"MAN"... leave the race card unplayed, there is no forum for it here.

  • Christmas/ yes 2 years ago

and if they wanted to reach out to customers of every kind...then why was Happy Thanksgiving omitted? WE aren't afraid of the race card anymore ...leave it at home.

I'm not shopping at Best Buy.

  • billbateman 2 years ago

My dead brother, who died in Iraq, thanks Best Buy for not supporting the troops at this time of day. To hell with all the decision makers at Best Buy

  • Anonymous 2 2 years ago

Ok Chick, so you are saying that the 9 million muslims in America hate America? Why be ignorant and face the facts.. the majority of muslims around the world are peaceful. According to statistics less then 0.1 % of muslims are extremists and those are the ones being glamorized all over the media. SO do not talk until you have your facts straight.

Best Buy is only trying to be fair. In Islam, Eid Al-Adha is pushed back 15 days every year. SO next year this holiday will not be around this time. Best Buy is just being fair this year for muslims because next year that holiday will not be during this time.

So dont be selfish and please support Best Buy. If you do not shop there just for this reason... that is just plain stupid.

BTW i do support our troops, i do respect all religions, i am an American Muslim.

  • Chick 2 years ago

    Anonymous 2,

It figures a mohammedan would come on Thanksgiving Day and Spit at Americans. Get your own facts right yourself. This is OUR holiday nothing to do with mohammedanism. It should not have been overlooked in favor of your religion as you claim was right. This is EXACTLY the kind atttitude my prior post was highlighting. Best Buy sent out eid al-whatever INSTEAD OF Happy Thanksgiving greetings ON THANKSGIVING because mohammedans wouldn't have the same time slot next year. So mohammedans according to you and BEST BUY did the right thing by honoring you on a National Holiday instead of The National Holidayitself.

Not buying it...Except the Immense disrespect expressed by You, your "religion" and BEST BUY. You didn't address the history and culture of violence I pointed out because it's True. Another FACT is that Very VERY FEW mohammedans said anything against the attacks in the name of allah. Because you support it. It is clear and unambiguous in the koran.ByeByeBESTBUY

Hey, "Chick" -- you're what's wrong with this country. I think you could use a refresher on the Crusades, too.

  • DISH Network 2 years ago

At DISH Network, we're definitely not afraid to wish everyone a merry Christmas! We encourage you to check out our latest commercial spot and celebrate Christmas right along with our employees- available on the DISHStudio channel on YouTube

  • Chick 2 years ago

Actually Megan, I am for America to be able to keep its' traditions without being pushed aside for PC concerns. The whole issue was one so-called religion being Held out in front while pushing Thanksgiving OFF the page. Eid al-mush-mush was given Ad space and "A Happy Thanksgiving" was not. It's simple they have the priority and Americans and Thanksgiving DO NOT. And the traditions of America are what's RIGHT with America. PC Favoritism is what is currently WRONG in America. With and In are two different words, a whole world of difference!

It would be good for you to research the Crusades yourself actually. Do you know when the first crusades was?? It was centuries after the INVASION of Europe by the mohammedans. Part of what the crusades were was a REACTION to this violent invasion by the "most peaceful religion in the world" as the PC crowd is trying to force down our throats. Why is the initial muslim violence OK but the European reaction NOT??? PC BS that's why.

  • Connie 2 years ago

I am sick of the PC Crap!! It is partially responsible for the Murderous attack at Fort Hood. So Merry Christmas everybody and if you don't like that you are probably a racist!!

  • wow! 2 years ago

    More people should read you.

  • Wheelerdude 2 years ago

I checked Thursday's Best Buy flyer and didn't see any mention on ANY religion - Christian or Muslim. Could it be that it was market specific? Didn't see it in the Spokane Flyer!

  • Tanner 2 years ago

Market specific? Good point. But there is no market in the US that is totally muslim. So should not have left out a Happy Thankgiving.

Also as others are saying Wheelerdude, it IS an American Holiday so That is what should have been emphasized. You have a point. But I'm still going to boycott.

The "peaceful Religion" is based on the concept of Convert the world to Islam or kill them. The peaceful ones are those who don't follow the true teaching of Islam.
It is also interesting that Mohamed based his new religion on the religion of the Jews, the people who they hate more than anything else in the world, and teach their children, from the time they are born, to hate them.

As far as political correctness goes, I think we need to tell the truth and if hurts somebody's feelings, well that's just the way life is. Sometimes the truth hurts.
I'm just glad that people are starting to wake up and realize that to be intimidated, and called names by liberals is not a reflection on our character, but a lame attempt on their part to make us conform to their misguided concept of what they think society should to be like.

I must ad that I misspoke before saying that the Muslims base their religion on the religion of the Jews. What I meant to say is that they copied a lot of their teachings but of course perverted them.

Their celebration of "Eid al-Adha feast honors the Koran story of Ibrahim, who is willing to sacrifice his son to display his obedience to God. A voice from heaven stops Ibrahim and tells him to kill a ram instead, a story strikingly similar to the Bible story of Abraham."

These people trace their religious heritage back through Ishmael.

"Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son; you shall call his name Ishmael; because The Lord has given heed to your affliction. He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen." (Genesis 16:11-12 RSV).
He grew up to be a man of the desert wilderness, with a wild and hostile attitude toward people, exactly as God described him to his mother.

  • susan 2 years ago

Not only that Willie, They are hostile to each other Too. In the desert and in America with all those muslim fathers and husbands killing their daughters and beheading their wives in PA.

  • Jon 2 years ago

So The EXAMINER.COM's response to this story is to put up a Muslim AD. Let's you know what The Examiner thinks of you all and of America doesn't it.

  • Greg 2 years ago

Wow!! Great comments. I wonder if Best Buy will do this on Christmas too??

All in all I think I'l just say Bye-Bye to Best Buy too.

  • Brett 2 years ago

Oh man, you're so right. My religion is the one correct one, and it outrages me when others disagree. I mean, sure, they have that right, but the majority of Americans are God-fearin' Christians, and we don't take kindly when some high-falutin' corporation gets all politically correct and acknowledges a religion not quite as popular.
