As of March 8, Best Buy now has an online deal that if you buy a new Wii U console, you'll receive a free $20 gift card that is shipped separately from the original order. Could this be a strategy by Best Buy to sell more Wii U systems? Anything is possible.
It's unknown how long Best Buy will keep up with this online deal, but it's expected to say for the month of March and possibly April, but remember that nothing has been confirmed. This deal could've been started by either Best Buy or Nintendo, but it's likely that they both worked out a limited time deal. This strategy could help boost Wii U sales, but by how much?
If you were offered $20 back for a $299 or $349 system, is it worth it? It could be if there was something out for the system that cost $20 that you could use. Games are $60 and the only thing that you could get with $20 is an eShop card or a protective case for your GamePad controller. One of the best uses for a $20 gift card is a used Wii game. Used Wii U games aren't under $20 yet but original Wii games can range from $5 to $40. Since Nintendo's new system is compatible with most Wii games, there won't be an issue when you make the purchase.
Best Buy is only making this offer available for the Wii U and no other system has the deal right now. It's possible that when the PS4 and next Xbox launches, Best Buy will eventually work out similar deals. Nintendo's Wii U console, which launched in November 2012, was the first home console in the 8th generation of gaming. The Wii U is already a success but not as successful as Nintendo hoped it would be. There is no need to worry as the only reason for this is a limited selection of games. Once Nintendo releases more games, sales will ultimately increase and it's possible that within the next 6 years, we'll see the Wii U dominating in sales just like the Wii did in the 7th generation.
