More data have surfaced that show that the U.S. guidelines for desirable blood pressure are set too high. According to the latest reasearch, 112/72 is the blood pressure at which you are at the lowest risk for death resulting from cardiovascular-related complications.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) website, "A blood pressure level of 140/90 mmHg or higher is considered high." That is the global recommendation for adults and is much higher than blood pressures should be for good health.
Several studies have shown that your cardiovascular risk starts climbing at 115/75 mm Hg - not 140/90. And starting at 115/75, the risk doubles for each 20 mm Hg increase in the systolic pressure and each 10 mm Hg increase in the diastolic pressure.
Blood pressures that are consistently high cause damage to the blood vessels and can lead to chronic heart failure, vision problems, kidney disorders, and even stroke.
These data show that ideal blood pressure is approximately 112/72. There's a big difference between this number and 140/90.
