Sweetened, baked apples with a hint of maple and vanilla under a blanket of sugared crust – wow! This is the best apple pie ever; it’s absolutely delicious!
What makes the difference? This apple pie recipe first bakes the apples with syrup and vanilla so they caramelize slightly before being used in the pie – it makes a wonderful difference in the texture and taste. If you don’t have real maple syrup, never fear; whatever you have on hand for syrup will work just fine.
‘Tis the season for apples. The air is crisp and the apples are being harvested as we speak. This is the perfect time to visit your local orchards. If you live in the Pittsburgh area, you have to make a trip to Soergel’s Orchards. This delightful place is part and parcel of the local history; started in the 1850s and now being managed by the sixth generation of the Soergel family, it includes apples from its orchards (plus other fruits in season), pumpkins (some are amazingly large!), honey from its bees, an entire gluten-free store, a greenhouse, gift shop, Amish furniture store, and so much more! It’s a fun family event, in addition to a must-visit location for fresh-from-the-farm fruits and vegetables. It’s right off the Wexford exit on I-79.
Best Apple Pie Ever Recipe
Ingredients for the Best Apple Pie:
- Pastry for 9-inch double crust pie
- 5- 6 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon
- ½ tsp. nutmeg
- 3 tablespoons butter
- A little extra sugar for sprinkling on the crust
Directions for making the Best Apple Pie Ever:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the maple syrup and vanilla. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet with sides (a jelly-roll pan works well) and spread out into a single layer as much as possible. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for 20 minutes – keep the oven on for the pie.
In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Line a pie plate with unbaked crust. Put the cooled apple slices evenly over the crust. Sprinkle evenly with the sugar/cinnamon mixture. Dot with pieces of the butter and cover with the other unbaked pastry crust. Trim the edges and cut slits in the top of the crust so the steam can escape. Brush the top crust lightly with water and sprinkle with sugar.
Bake for 30 – 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove and cool for at least one hour before serving.
