Anyone who is seasoned in fantasy football play knows that a good wide receiver can make or break your team. On August 17, the Bleacher Report talked about the biggest WR busts this season. Check this list of the the best and worst pickups in the wide receiver position. How do they stack up with your team?
According to the Yahoo Sports pre-draft rankings, the top five receivers this year are Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, A.J. Green, Brandon Marshall and Julio Jones in that order. These rankings are based on a mixture of past performance as well as projections due to who they are playing with. A great wide receiver won't do much if their quarterback prefers to run the ball.
Calvin Johnson aka Megatron is, without a doubt, the best choice for wide receiver. If he is available, take him. He is one of the most reliable receivers in the league and he will consistently pull in points. Dez Bryant is also looking to have a very good year and will not disappoint. After that, there may be a few sleepers that will put the veterans to shame this year.
Julio Jones makes the top five list but might not be the best pick. He is sharing the ball with Roddy White and while both are awesome at what they do, there is no telling which way the ball will go. He could be good, he could also be a disappointment. They also have Steven Jackson in the running back position to consider. Just keep these things in mind because that could be a lot of points shared between three great players.
The same story goes for Denver receivers Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. They are both getting the ball from Peyton Manning but they are both great and have to share it. Wes Welker is getting a lot of talk this season as a great pick up. He might turn out to be a bust if Manning decides he'd rather throw the ball to Thomas. That is too high of a draft choice to give up on a maybe.
If all the top receivers are taken when your turn comes up, always consider which quarterbacks like to throw the ball. There may be a few sleeper wide receivers in the fantasy football pool this year. Marques Colston is always a favorite backup. Drew Brees loves to throw that rock and somebody needs to be on the catching end. Consider Colston as a second or even possibly as a first wide receiver pickup. Additionally, Pierre Garcon might be worth watching this year. We all known Robert Griffin III loves to run but coming off his most recent injury, he might be more apt to throw the ball this year.
Vincent Brown is another good pickup this year. With Danario Alexander and Malcolm Floyd both injured, Brown is sure to get the ball. This will be his third season in the league and Chargers fans can expect him to put on quite a show since he is the biggest player not injured at the moment.
