As we look ahead to the coming year with anticipation, let’s take a peek back over the previous year’s events in Atlanta. As far as things to do and see in our fair city, one stands out above (and spins circles around) all others. The Summer 2013 debut of SkyView Atlanta – a 200-foot tall Ferris wheel located in the heart of downtown Atlanta – added a scenic and spectacular new element to the concept of an Atlanta staycation. Poised among a number of other hot staycation destinations, such as Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and CNN Center, SkyView serves as the ideal way to start – or end – a day of sightseeing in the city.

Bear in mind, this isn’t one of those Ferris wheels of yesteryear where riders’ dangling feet would often fall prey to more than one lost flip-flop. True to form for one of the South’s most sophisticated cities, SkyView Atlanta boasts 42 climate-controlled, enclosed gondolas – which help keep riders cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Each gondola features 360-degrees of windows for panoramic views and comfortably seats up to 6 passengers. A VIP gondola is available at a premium rate and offers the ultimate experience for up to 5 passengers thanks to Ferrari leather seats, a glass bottom, TV monitor and champagne bucket.

Sporting the tagline “You Can See Atlanta From Here,” SkyView Atlanta is open year-round, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day – weather permitting. Hours of operation during the winter months are noon – 10pm Sunday to Thursday; noon – 11pm Friday; and 10am to 11pm on Saturdays. Summer months bring extended hours of 10am – 10pm Monday to Wednesday; 10am – midnight Thursday to Saturday; and noon to 10pm on Sundays. SkyView is located at the south end of Centennial Olympic Park at 168 Luckie Street, NW. Currently, tickets to ride SkyView Atlanta are:

Adult (Ages 13+) - $13.50 + tax

Senior (Ages 65+) - $12.15 + tax
