The 2012 Richmond VA Boat Show featured a few boats that caught the eyes of many visitors. These vessels were the best at providing likely buyers with just what they wanted. We found the best family fishing boat at the show, the Robalo 247 DC. But what about families that want something a bit less “fishy”? Or maybe needed a less expensive, but still versatile package that makes the entire family happy? This Examiner believes the best all-around family boat at the show was the all-new 21 foot Fun Chaser deck boat by Carolina Skiff.
Deck boats are nothing new; the Fun Chaser is a hybrid of sorts. Sporting a shallow V-bottom fiberglass hull, the Fun Chaser has the interior layout of a spacious pontoon boat. That alone is not a game-changer, even with Carolina Skiff’s reputation for bullet-proof boats. How about a changing area that folds away into a lounge seat? Want a plush lounge interior, or do you prefer a low-maintenance fishing layout, a pair of livewells and prewired for your choice of trolling motor? That’s all pretty great, but still not the only boat on the market like that. So, what makes the Fun Chaser special?
Take a look at one and the reason is obvious; unlike pontoons and similar deck boats, the Fun Chaser has molded fiberglass side fences, with glossy molded-in colors and eye-catching graphics. Carolina Skiff uses molded-in recesses to mount docking and navigation lights, smooth access gates and railings that don’t pinch fingers and incorporates small openings along the bottom edges of the side walls that allow rain, spray or wash water to drain away without leaving puddles. The boats have a cohesive, finished look about them.
While the boats are available with a plush interior similar to many top-shelf pontoon boats, this Examiner prefers the fishing layout. The fiberglass flooring is nonslip when wet, easy to clean, and well set up for fishing. The swim platform and stern access gates are available on both layouts for those times when the kids want to wakeboard, or parents want to explore a new beach. Storage for toys or fishing rods is abundant, including a large compartment in the center of the deck.
