Bangor---- The dynamic due of Isaiah Bess and Trevor Lyford combined to score 39 points in leading the Penquis Patriots to a 51-23 class C boys quarterfinal victory over Stearns Wednesday morning at the Bangor Auditorium.
Bess (a junior) scored his 1,000 career point when he nailed a three pointer with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter.
Lyford scored eight first quarter points as the Patriots started the game on a 9-0 run and had a 13-3 lead after the first eight minutes.
Penquis kept it going in the second quarter when they scored the first six points to take a 19-3 lead. The Patriots held a 29-12 halftime lead.
Bess recorded 21 points (8-9 FT), seven rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals to lead the Patriots. Lyford finished with 18 points, six rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block.
The Patriots shot (20-34) 58.8% from the field. The Penquis pressure defense forced 16 turnovers and held the Minutemen to (10-32) 31.2 % shooting.
Penquis (18-1) will take on Dexter Friday, February 22nd at 7 p.m. in a class C semifinal game. The Tigers handed the Patriots their only loss.
Kyle McVey led the Minutemen with 11 points. Stearns finishes the season with a 13-7 record.
