Berkeley's Ed Roberts Campus, a center for disability rights, opens its doors

Although the final touches are still in the works, the long-awaited Ed Roberts Campus opened this week. Located at the Ashby BART station in south Berkeley, the Campus is a universally and sustainably designed center for services, advocacy, education, training, and policy related to disability rights.

Seven partner agencies, offering an array of services for both adults and children, designed the campus and will have a presence there: the Center for Accessible Technology, the Center for Independent Living, BORP (Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program), DREDF (Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund), Through the Looking Glass, The World Institute on Disability, and the Computer Technologies Program. The center is named for Edward Roberts, a pioneer in the disability rights and independent living movement, and the first student with severe disabilities to attend UC Berkeley.

Several agencies have already moved into offices at the Campus, and more will follow. In addition, BORP opened its new fitness center at the site, with yoga and movement classes for people with and without disabilities. Click here for a schedule of classes.

This column will highlight the various agencies at the Ed Roberts Campus during the coming weeks.
