Producer Nicholas Bunker and his rookie cameraman were assigned to "The Edge," with Zeke, Emily and John Bunce. Nicholas was relieved to be with Zeke again, because they have already established a relationship.
Zeke was ready to get this season started with his new dredger The Edge with Emily Reidel and his lifelong friend, John Bunce. On the first day of dredging, John was a no-show and Zeke and Emily went out without him. John tried to swim in the cold Bering Sea because he missed the deadline to leave to go dredging on The Edge. Suffering from hypothermia from the 36 degree water, he almost died. They manage to revive him. He apologized to Zeke and Emily and regretted his bad decision and spent time in the hospital with hypothermia and a core body temperature of 90 degrees.
John was the fastest panner in a contest where they put three nuggets in a pan and the fastest panner who found the nuggets was the winner. Steve Pomrenke was the odds-on favorite. However, the winner was John Bunce who found the nuggets in twenty seconds.
John hung his trophy on "The Edge," and proclaimed that he was the best miner in all of Nome. Despite a day filled with several mishaps, Zeke promised to give him props for the rest of the season.
