If Samuel Berendsen's resolution was to win a race in 2014, he wasted little time in accomplishing that goal.
Four days into the new year, the 19-year-old runner placed first out of a field of 349 in the Yates-Astro Resolution 5K in a time of 17:00. That was 5 seconds ahead of second-place Drew Rabun, 33. Jonathan Fenske, 44, was third in 18:34.
It was all teens on the women's side with Grace Norman, 15, taking top honors in 20:26, followed by Sarah Glover, 15, in second (21:10) and 18-year-old Bethany Norman in third (21:14).
Tony Murphy, 42, won the men's masters title in 18:46, while 64-year-old Jenny Kyle continued to belie her age by topping the women's masters field in 23:26.
