"Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta" star, Benzino was shot by his nephew, Gai Scott, while in route to a funeral procession for his mother, Mary Scott, this past weekend. Gai Scott was arraigned Monday in a Plymouth District Court for the attempted murder of his uncle and claims self-defense. Tensions between the reality star and is family had been escalating for years and finally erupted in gunfire, leaving Benzino wounded in his upper arm and back.
According to the Boston Globe, Gai Scott claims his uncle was threatening to kill him for weeks leading up to the funeral, so he purchased a handgun for protection. Benzino says the feud is over “money, jealousy and envy”. He accused his nephew of mishandling his mother’s property and finances, but no one really knows what the catalyst is that sparked their feud. The hip hop mogul says due to the intense beef with his family, he wasn't attending his mother’s funeral and had already made his peace.
Gai Scott admitted to police he had shot his uncle, but only after he threatened to harm him first. He admitted to emptying one gun and resuming fire with an additional gun until he ran out of ammunition. Benzino, whose real name is, Raymond Scott, was released from South Shore hospital on Monday and gave an interview describing the horrific encounter, “At that point, I thought I was going to die” he said.
Raymond Scott’s attorney, Martin Leppo, says this was not self-defense. He said his client was chased down the highway while shots were fired into his car and Ray Scott did not have a firearm.” Six shots into Ray Scott’s car, and he chased him on the highway; that doesn't sound like self-defense to me,’’ Leppo said.
A lawyer for Gai Scott states once his client has his day in court, the facts of this case will become clearer. “When the dust settles, with respect to this case, it will become abundantly clear that Mr. Scott, a licensed gun owner, was acting in self-defense and the defense of his family,” said Jon Ciraulo.
The details of this case are very sketchy since Benzino refuses to speak about what he thinks the real motive is. Gai Scott is claiming self-defense, yet he showed up to a funeral with a hand gun to protect himself from someone who wasn't going to attend. There is two sides to every story, but somewhere in the middle lays the truth.
