Benitez Ends Pachuca’s Dominance over America

MEXICO CITY – Club America ended an eight game winless “at home” streak Sunday with a 1-0 victory over CF Pachuca at the Azteca stadium.  Ecuadorian Cristian Benitez scored the lone goal of the match that returned America to winning at home.

“I was satisfied with the development of the game and the attitude the players showed on the field,” Aguilas Coach Miguel Herrera said at the end of the Clausura 2012 Week 7 game.  “We play the same, whether it’s a home or away game.  We had the better opportunities to score.  Pachuca was undefeated.  The press listed them as favorites to win this game.  We proved them wrong. We concreted our play and defeated a really good team.”

Benitez received a pass in the 57th minute of play a few yards past the midfield marker.  He saw goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota off his line and fired a rocket that buried itself in the left corner of the net.  The Tuzos keeper dove, but could not prevent the fall of his net.

The game lacked the hype it received, since both teams are considered historically strong.  Pachuca is considered the birth place of Mexican soccer, and America is one of the big four. The ball moved back and forth with no real shots on goal.  Pachuca took control of the game for a while.  However, it was the locals who would score to take the game.

America ended an eight game winless streak (0-2-6) against Pachuca on top of ending the winless streak at home that began in August 2011.  The result leaves both teams with 12 points.  Pachuca stays in the 6th position, with America in 7th place due to goal differential.

Toluca Celebrates 95 years with Victory

Diablos Rojos de Toluca defeated Jaguares de Chiapas FC 3-1 to celebrate their 95th anniversary as a club at the Nemesio Diez stadium.   Carlos Esquivel had a double, and Uruguayan Ivan Alonso increased his personal lead in the goal table to eight.  Colombian Jackson Martinez scored for Jaguares late in the game.

Martinez’ goal came as a surprise.  The Colombian ran the ball in, cleared himself of his marker and shot the ball to catch goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera off his line to score one of the nicer goals of the round.

Morelia Turns it Around

Monarcas Morelia defeated Puebla FC 2-1 at the Cuauhtemoc stadium in Puebla to extend their winning streak to three.

Argentine Rodrigo Salinas scored the first goal for Puebla in the second half.  But the camoteros could not hold the lead.  Miguel Sabah and Luis Sandoval were able to get on the board, turning the game around in favor of the Monarchy.

Monarcas’ victory gives them 14 points and moves them into the third spot behind Santos and Tigres UANL on the league table.
