The Cincinnati Bengals announced today, Jan. 25, that they have signed free agent linebacker Aaron Maybin.
Aaron Maybin will be joining the Bengals having played most recently with the New York Jets, after initially having been drafted in the first round in 2009 by the Buffalo Bills, 11th overall. Maybin led the Jets in sacks with six and forced fumbles, four, in 2011. In 2012 he played eight games with the Jets and ranked fifth on the team in quarterback hits but was released by the team on Nov. 13.
Clearly the Cincinnati Bengals see something they like in Aaron Maybin (6-4, 240; Penn State) even if the Jets saw fit to let him go. The Bengals have history of capitalizing on talent other teams have overlooked.
The signing of Aaron Maybin also renews chatter regarding the future of Cincinnati Bengals own free agent linebacker Rey Maualuga.
Though named a captain by head coach Marvin Lewis this past season, Maualuga has not been a stand out at his position and struggled during the Bengals playoff loss to the Houston Texans. Maualuga has been down on his own performance saying, “I really don’t know if they (the Bengals) want me back.”
Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer indicated he isn’t going to make any decisions based on one game and would like to get all of his free agents back. However the fact that the team is shopping for linebackers so early may not seem to bode well for Rey Maualuga.
