The Titans opened the scoring on their very first drive with a field goal and then had another chance to score when Andy Dalton was sacked and fumbled in Bengals' territory. This time Rob Bironas missed his field goal attempt and Cincinnati marched down the field.
Giovani Bernard marched the Bengals into Tennessee territory on three straight runs and then Dalton and Bernard connected for 22 yards. Dalton then hit Mohammed Sanu for 24 yards on a 3rd and 10 to get to the 1-yard line. Bernard punched it in from there to give the Bengals a 7-3 lead.
The Bengals defense forced a three and out and then Cincinnati marched back down the field again. The game jumped to 14-3 when Dalton found Sanu for a 2-yard touchdown to cap the 71 yard drive. Another Bironas missed field goal set up another Bengals scoring drive, this time a 38-yard field goal from Mike Nugent to make it 17-3.
Tennessee had another shot before the first half ended and even changed kickers, but still were left with the same results. Maikon Bonani missed his 47-yard attempt to leave the Bengals with a 14 point lead at the end of the half.
The Titans finally broke through on their first two drives of the second half when Bonani made a 26-yard field goal and then Ryan Fitzpatrick connected with Brandon Barden. Tennessee tried for two, but failed to make it a 17-12 game.
Cincinnati jumped the lead to 24-12 when Dan Herron burst through for a 40 yard touchdown run. Herron finished as the Bengals leading rusher with 81 yards on nine carries.
Fitzpatrick threw his second touchdown of the game to cut the lead to 24-19 and then the Bengals responded with a field goal from Nugent to make it 27-19. The Bengals had a chance to put the game out of reach after the Titans went three and out, but another costly quarterback fumble, this time in the red zone by Josh Johnson, gave Tennessee new life.
Instead Dontay Moch came up with a huge sack that sent the Titans back to their own 4-yard line. Tennesse was able to pick up a first down, but their rally stalled in the hands of Rusty Smith and the Bengals were able to claim their second victory of the preseason.
The Bengals will head to Dallas for their final road preseason game next Saturday.
