The Cincinnati Bengals could possibly lose their defensive coordinator to their northern rival—the Cleveland Browns. Coach Mike Zimmer is known around the NFL as one of the top defensive gurus in the NFL. The NFL’s website has stated that Zimmer had a scheduled interview with the Cleveland Browns today.
The Browns recently tried to lure Oregon’s Chip Kelly away from the college game. Based on local sports talk, it has been said that Kelly’s stock dropped after he appeared to be on the fence about moving to the NFL.
The Browns are interested in finding an offensive minded coach. But they did have an interest in defensive coordinators Ray Horton (Arizona Cardinals) and Zimmer.
The San Diego Chargers have also expressed an interest in interviewing Mike Zimmer as their next head coach.
Earlier today, former Hall of Fame Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman said on the Bull & Fox show that Zimmer has certainly earned a chance to become a head NFL coach. Coach Zimmer has been an NFL coach since 2000. After starting his coaching career with the Dallas Cowboys, he spent one season with the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Bengals staff in 2008.
Coach Zimmer has spent time working under coaches Bill Parcells, Bobby Petrino, Marvin Lewis, Dave Campo and Emmitt Thomas.
The Bengals exited the playoffs last week against the Houston Texans. With a ringing endorsement from Troy Aikman, Zimmer could be on his way on Interstate 71 North to Cleveland.
