The Cincinnati Bengals continued their dominance in the preseason and finished by knocking off the Colts 27-10 at Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday.
The starters were out early for both teams, but Andy Dalton still managed to lead the Bengals to points. Dalton completed his only pass attempt to Mohammed Sanu for 18 yards and then Giovanni Bernard found the endzone for the third game this preseason to give Cincinnati a 7-3 lead.
Andrew Luck didn't even appear for the Colts who were content on resting their starters. Matt Hasselbeck was 5-8 and led Indianapolis to its first three points.
From there it was up to the backup quarterbacks to lead their teams to victory as Chandler Harnish took on Josh Johnson as each continue to fight for a roster spot. Johnson led his team to points first as he set up a 42-yard field goal by Mike Nugent to make it a 10-3 game at the end of the first quarter.
The Colts missed an opportunity early in the second quarter when Cedric Peerman fumbled around midfield, but Adam Vinatieri missed a 52-yard field goal to give the Bengals excellent field position. They were able to take advantage as Johnson connected with Marvin Jones for a 3-yard touchdown making it 17-3, a score that remained until halftime.
John Skelton took over midway through the first series of the second half and led the Bengals to another field goal to extend the lead to 20-3. An interception set up a short field for the Bengals and Rex Burkhead punched it in from two yards out for a 27-3 lead.
Dominique Jones finally got the Colts in the end zone after a 16 play drive that last over eight minutes. Harnish connected with Jones from seven yards out to cut the lead to 27-10. The Bengals then consumed nine of the final 11 minutes of the game to seal the victory.
The Bengals will take the field next in the regular season opener at Soldier Field to take on the Chicago Bears on Sept. 8. Cincinnati will play its first home game on Sept. 16 against Pittsburgh.
