Benefits of adding kiwi to a child's diet

Adding more of any kind of fruit to a child's diet can be greatly beneficial. Not only will it help you steer clear of sugary goods that can promote diabetes, but the nutritional value alone can increase physical and mental attributes. Kiwi is one of those fruits that can provide an incredible amount of benefits that not everyone knows about. What kind of a nutritional bonus do these small green fruits provide?

1. Increased Vitamin C - Although the orange is well known for its capacity to improve the immunity system, did you know that a single kiwi can provide almost 20-percent more vitamin C? In fact, a cup of sliced kiwi can provide your child with almost three times the suggested daily value of this immunity boosting component. This is also more than three times more than what a medium sized orange provides. When considering the size comparison between the two, it can be amazing to think about how much is delivered in such a small package.

2. Potassium Intake - As a bone enhancing component and an electrochemical balancing agent, potassium is crucial for the overall efficiency of the human body. Depending on the age of your child, he or she needs to consume up to 3,800mg of potassium per day. A cup of sliced kiwi can account for almost 15-percent of this needed mineral. Of course the younger your child is, the more of an impact this green fruit will have on potassium levels.

3. Cell Damage - At any given moment, free radicals could be coursing through your child's body. These intruders can cause cellular damage resulting in cancerous growths later in life. Kiwi, among many other fruit, is loaded with anti-oxidants that help rid the body of these free radicals reducing the chance of damage forming. This doesn't mean that your child will be immune to various cancers throughout his or her life, but the anti-oxidant levels contained in kiwi can greatly reduce the risks.

4. Digestive Maintenance - Some children may have bowel problems which may warrant the use of a suppository. Kiwi contains the protein-dissolving enzyme actinidain which can assist in the digestion of meals. Serving kiwi as a desert or in addition to others after a meal may help your child by relieving complications from digesting foods that may not agree with their stomachs. Balancing the ability to properly digest food can go a long way from needing the use of a suppository.

5. Skin Protection - During the spring, summer and fall months, it's quite common for children to become sun burnt while playing outside. Although lotion is always the best deterrent against this type of damage, the vitamin E contained in kiwi can help reduce the risks of cellular damage as well as help repair the skin afterwards. As this component encourages skin health, it could even lead to the reduced onset of acne.

Kiwi can be a great addition to your fruit medley desert. Its immunity and bone assisting nature can help the body of your child become more efficient and healthy. When considering the amount of good that can come from a single small fruit, it could change your mind about how many you add to your shopping list. Promote healthy living for your child and invest more in the benefits of kiwifruit.
