Sitting in my living room listening to Tiffany Hall describe her work with 3-5 year old Head Start students, reminded me of all the wonderful creativity that comes from allowing our children and grandchildren to express themselves and learn how to use different art mediums. “If art is a language, it can reveal to others, thoughts within an individual’s mind” (Hobbs and Rush, Teaching Children Art). Hall is a Head Start teacher in Astoria’s Head Start program. Her vision to support children’s art and the Head Start families, along with her hard work, have led to the First Annual, “Art Through the Eyes of a Child” art show and benefit.

This year’s inaugural event will be held in conjunction with both The Week of the Young Child and Astoria’s Second Saturday Art Walk. On Saturday, April 12, 2014, from 4:00-8:00 P.M., Original artwork done by students 3-5 years of age, will be on display at Winnifred Byrne’s Luninari Arts Gallery at 1133 Commercial St. in Astoria. There will be a silent auction and raffle with all proceeds going to the Parent Group of Astoria Head Start.

Local world music group, Acustica, will be performing for the event, and El Tapatio and the Columbia Coffee Roasters are donating refreshments for guests. Be sure to make “Art Through the Eyes of a Child” one of your stops on this month’s Art Walk. Celebrate the Week of the Young Child, support arts education for our local children and enjoy an evening of art, music, good food, and good company at the Luminari Arts Gallery.
