There are two important benefit concerts on the schedule for this month and next.
First up is “Celebrating Eddie Marshall.” Set for February 19 at Yoshi’s in San Francisco, it will featureteh likes of Bobby McFerrin, Bobby Hutcherson and Tootie Heath. Admission is $40 and proceeds benefit the Eddie Marshall Scholarship Funds at Living Jazz's (formerly Rhythmic Concepts) Jazz Camp West and Berkeley’s Jazzschool. As the press release notes:
Eddie was a long-time leading light of the Bay Area jazz scene, not only because of his musical prowess, but because of his warmth and joyful spirit. As house drummer for the famed night club, Keystone Korner, Marshall played with nearly every major name in jazz, including such icons as Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, as well as Bobby McFerrin and fellow Bay Area-jazz master Bobby Hutcherson. An all-star cast of musicians will descend upon the stage with several coming from New York and Los Angeles to participate in this momentous occasion. Eddie's own group, Holy Mischief, will open the matinee concert, playing compositions and arrangements that Eddie created.
March 10 then brings a fund-raiser for UC Berkeley Jazz and Improvised Music (JIM) Fund featuring the Art Lande and Paul McCandless Duo and the Berkeley Nu Jazz Collective under the direction of Myra Melford. Tickets are $5-$15 and the site is Hertz Hall on the Berkeley campus. What’s JIM been up to? Here’s the answer:
The JIM Fund, under the direction of Melford and UC Berkeley faculty member and trumpeter Christy Dana, was created by and for UC Berkeley music students. Its primary purpose is to raise money and support for studies in jazz and contemporary improvised music, especially in light of recent budget cuts. The JIM Fund strives to provide new instruments and audio equipment, to increase the number of master classes and coaching sessions with world-class musicians, along with establishing an endowment. JIM allows students to study, perform and collaborate on a variety of approaches to improvised music by creating a thriving community of musicians. Since its founding in 2009, JIM has created the Berkeley Nu Jazz Collective, produced an innovative collaboration between improvisers in food and in music, presented a master class with the progressive Jazz supergroup Kneebody, and held concerts with world-class musicians Denny Zeitlin, Taylor Eigsti, Matt Wilson and Mark Dresser.
