It has been almost a week since people went out of their way to do charitable acts and donate to their favorite philanthropic organizations. People of every age, ethnicity and location got involved in this great day.
One organization, Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) was on the receiving end of the day. Many people, including some very young people, were benefactors of the day and wanted to help out this amazing pet rescue organization.
The spirit of the season was evident at HWAC as the schoolchildren from Solana Santa Fe Elementary School and other volunteers from local business partners (Snooze AM Eatery in Del Mar and Southwest Airlines) were present last Tuesday to demonstrate what GIVING TUESDAY was all about. After a short review, there was no doubt that the true spirit still exists! Cynical minds can rest easily after viewing the photos of that day!
Giving Tuesday comes in the midst of the holiday shopping, cyber sales and frantic have-to-haves. Since it is the ending celebration after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it is not easily forgotten – especially when it is clear that people really do care!
Demonstrating that giving doesn’t always require money, the Giving Tuesday volunteers instead gave their hearts, time and energy to tasks around Center grounds. Approximately 75 school children (grades 2nd through 4th) from Solana Santa Fe Elementary School, along with employees from Southwest Airlines, and Snooze AM Eatery in Del Mar, provided philanthropic holiday cheer… repainting the Center’s humane education building; prepping craft projects for the Center’s upcoming Frosty Farms Event; and donating pet food to the Center’s AniMeals Program – providing pet food to homebound elderly.
The Center is truly grateful each and every time that volunteers from the local community step up to help them! It is living testimony that the work that the Helen Woodward staff does is worthwhile to those around them!Helen Woodward Animal Center is a private, non-profit organization where “people help animals and animals help people.” It was founded in 1972 in Rancho Santa Fe, California. The Center provides continues to provide services for more than 57,000 people and thousands of animals annually through adoptions, educational and therapeutic programs both onsite and throughout the community. Helen Woodward Animal Center is also the creator of the international Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive and the Animal Center Education Services program, teaching the business of saving lives to animal welfare leaders from around the world. That is why they are so darn grateful for the community involvement such as could be witnessed on Giving Tuesday. For more information go to: www.animalcenter.org.
Children especially love animals and love to give to them. #GivingTuesday is a movement that was designed to celebrate and provide incentives to give, culminating with a global day of giving; this year on December 3, 2013. This effort harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners – charities, families, businesses, and individuals – to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season. #GivingTuesday inspires people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they celebrate and help create a better world. A team of recognized experts and influencers, initially convened by leaders of 92ndStreet Y and supported by a core group of founding partners, originally spearheaded this effort.
