Benedict Cumberbatch joins 'The Imitation Game'

Deadline has learned today that a long in development Black List script is finally seeing some movement.

Originally “The Imitation Game” was picked up Warner Bros. with Leonardo DiCaprio (“Critters 3”) set to star, but that fell apart a little while ago.

Now Morten Tyldum (“Headhunters” has been brought on to direct, and the tremendously talented up-and-comer Benedict Cumberbatch (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) is in serious negotiations to star.

If he takes the part he will play Alan Turing, a brilliant cryptanalyst whose expertise cracked Germany’s “Enigma code” and helped turn the tide of World War II for the Allies and whose homosexuality made him a target of prosecution.

Such a heavy and dramatic role seems almost too perfect for the still underappreciated Benedict (just wait until all his upcoming films hit theaters.

You’ll see his name everywhere). Production will hopefully begin later this year for a fall 2014 release (suspiciously in time for Oscar season).
