According to Metro on Dec. 15, Benedict Cumberbatch was being interviewed on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and had expressed that he is lobbying to be in J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: Episode VII". He is currently starring in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and has been picked for the role with such a distinctive sound that would give an accurate portrayal of the subject he is imitating.
"I just sort of would leave casual messages on his phone as a lightsaber. I thought he thought he was getting bad cell reception or something".
Cumberbatch had later explained that he had done his own rendition of Chewbacca in front of Harrison Ford on "The Graham Norton Show". When he had completed the impression, Ford just looked at him dumbfounded and Cumberbatch jokingly asked him if it "brought him back to the set".
When Cumberbatch did the voice over for Smaug, he pretty much had to get into the motions of the most lizard-like characteristics. Since he's more of a human actor than a lizard, it was quite a challenge to take on the look and feel of the character he was portraying in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug".
