After an “almost” last week in Morelia, Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente finally won a game in La Liga MX. The Aztec dogs defeated Chiapas FC 2-1 at the Caliente Stadium in week 5 action of the Apertura 2014.

Dario Benedetto owned the pitch of the Caliente against a Jaguares team that never eased off the pressure. It only took four minutes for the rojinegros to pierce the net. Venezuelan Juan Arango centered to Benedetto who was inbound and beat the offside play. The Argentine saw the keeper away from his posts and volleyed the ball over him for the 1-0.

The game was not without off-field excitement. In the 30th minute the team coaches had an exchange of words leading the central referee to intercede. The heat continued at half time with both coaches being sent off the bench after punches were thrown.

Xolos maintained control of the field doing as they pleased for the remainder of the first half. The game went to the break with the home side leading 1-0.

The second half began with a slight scare for the home side in a play that Xolos goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo dove to save his net. But Benedetto would appear once more in the 55th minute of play. On a defensive error from defender Edgar Dueñas. American Joe Corona centered to Benedetto. However, Dueñas intercepted the ball with his chest. The change sent the ball over goalkeeper Oscar Francisco Jimenez. Benedetto was there to push the ball into the net for the 2-0.

“With luck I scored two goals. But it is an important victory for the team. Hopefully this is a ‘shot in the arm’ since the team had been doing things right,” Benedetto said after the game. “We weren’t getting good results, but we expect this to turn into a good pace.”

It looked like Xolos would claim a clean sheet for the evening, however, Vicente Matias Vuoso break the net for Jaguares in the 86th minute of play with header. Chiapas applied pressure in the final minutes of play, but Tijuana held their ground to win 2-1.

Xoloitzcuintles will travel to Mexico City to take on Pumas UNAM in week 6 action.
