Ben & Jerry's unexpectedly froze a lot of brains today. On Feb. 26, the company debuted not only four new flavors but its new Core ice cream line. Ben & Jerry's Cores now allow us to get right to eating one of the things we love best about its ice cream – the decadent chunks and add-ins.
Ben & Jerry's Cores are just what the name suggests. Each core offers two ice creams, one on each side of the Core. And what is that Core? The ice cream pint features a column or “core” ingredient for added deliciousness, a thick vein of flavor.
Ben & Jerry’s three Core flavors are fudge (of various flavors), caramel and raspberry jam. The Core enables the creation of four ice cream treats, four of them new:
- Hazed & Confused: Chocolate & Hazelnut Ice Creams with Fudge Chips and a Hazelnut Fudge Core;
- That’s My Jam: Raspberry & Chocolate Ice Creams with Fudge Chips and a Raspberry Core;
- Peanut Butter Fudge: Chocolate & Peanut Butter Ice Creams with mini Peanut Butter Cups and a Peanut Butter Fudge Core; and
- Salted Caramel: Sweet Cream Ice Cream with Blonde Brownies and a Salty Caramel Core.
The flavors were created by Ben & Jerry’s team of Flavor Gurus at the company’s headquarters in Vermont
The Core flavors were created by Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Gurus at the company’s headquarters in Vermont. Ben & Jerry's Cores are inspired by the popular Karamel Sutra, which features chocolate and caramel ice creams with fudge chips and thick caramel veining.
“We are always looking to make something bigger and better for our fans,” said the lead flavor developer, Eric Fredette in a press release. “We wanted to blow out the concept of fun flavors, chunks and swirls and take it over the top,” Fredette added.
Ben & Jerry's invites ice-cream lovers to try the new flavors, saying “experience uber-indulgence with our new Cores. Each includes a core center of fudge, caramel or real raspberry jam, which perfectly compliments the super-premium ice cream and multitude of chunks packed into every pint. So pop the lid, grab a spoon and get down to business.”
Ben & Jerry's Cores will be available in the U.S. in pints beginning February 2014. Handmade Core Sundaes featuring a core of hot fudge or caramel between your two favorite flavors will be available in Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops beginning this spring. The pints are priced at $4.39 each. (Ben & Jerry Core has been available in the U.K. since 2012.)
What will consumers say about the new Cores? Well, we’re probably too busy taste-testing to answer. As for many licks will it take to get to Ben & Jerry’s Core, we’re willing to bet a lot of us will be willing to experiment – a lot – to get the bottom of the pint. Er, make that answer.
