Warner Bros' latest announcement came as quite a surprise to many. Oscar-winning director Ben Affleck will be starring as Batman in their upcoming ‘Man of Steel’ sequel. The studio broke the news on Thursday, August 22.
They say there is a first time for everything, and Batman and Superman sharing the screen is definitely a first. Zack Snyder will be Affleck and Henry Cavill’s director for the upcoming project. The untitled film is slated to open worldwide on July 17, 2015.
The press release shares that Affleck’s Batman will be “an entirely new incarnation of the character.”
Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are among those returning to their roles.
Snyder witnessed his ‘Man of Steel’ gross over $649 million worldwide, and he feels confident that Affleck is the choice for a successful sequel.
“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in the billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him,” Snyder shared.
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character,” Warner Bros. exec Greg Silverman said in the announcement.
Affleck played a superhero in the 2003 ‘Daredevil’ film, and ‘Hollywoodland’ also gave him some additional experience in this area. The former ‘Good Will Hunting” and “Armageddon” star now has quite the impressive role to add to his resume, but are Batman fans satisfied with his new gig? Christian Bale won over viewers, but will his successor receive the same approval?
Do you think Affleck can pull off ‘Batman?’
