Ben Affleck is the new Batman, joining the likes of Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and the recent Christian Bale as Gotham City’s protector and Dark Knight. Affleck will play the caped crusader in the upcoming “Batman vs. Superman” movie, reports Forbes on Aug. 23.
After weeks of speculation over who would replace Christian Bale as the next Batman, the announcement came from Warner Bros. that Affleck will reprise the role in the “Man of Steel” sequel.
Affleck was a fan favorite, but few Hollywood insiders thought the "Argo" director would land the role. According to Forbes, speculation about the casting of Batman had previously revolved around actors Josh Brolin, Joe Manganiello and Richard Armitage.
The New York Post is taking the news in a different direction, reporting that fans are furious over the choice of Affleck as the new Batman.
Affleck himself seemed to downplay the idea of ever donning another superhero costume. Speaking of his role as Daredevil in the 2003 film, Affleck was critical of his performance.
“By playing a superhero, I have inoculated myself from ever playing another superhero,” Affleck said back in 2006. Wearing the red Daredevil costume “was a source of humiliation,” for the actor, who said he would not play another made-up character anytime soon.
Perhaps the draw of the Dark Knight's lore changed Affleck’s mind.
In an official statement, Warner Bros executive Greg Silverman said:
“We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics’ most enduringly popular superheroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack [Zack Snyder – co-writer and co-director] will bring new dimension to the duality of this character.”
Forbes reports the film, due to be released in 2015, will feature Affleck “playing an older, established Batman in the new film. And every indication is that this Batman will end up in a titanic battle with Superman.”
