BeMoneySmartUSA financial literacy training offers hope for digital natives

Last week Saturday, teenagers from across the Sacramento region attended a free workshop offered by BeMoneySmartUSA (sponsored by the California Lottery) and held at the University of Phoenix on Gateway Oaks in Sacramento.

The next class is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, at the Phoenix University in Roseville on Gibson Drive. (Register here.)

In our cyber-powered hyped-headlines world, it can be very difficult for youth to unplug and develop a strong sense of their own values, goals and hope for the future.

Sacramento-based motivational speaker, Linda Bigler, was a guest speaker and encouraged these teens to take charge of their financial future.  Her presentation walks the teens through the process of finding their passion, shedding fear, and setting goals.

It is important for the next generation to develop “friend communities” off and on-line that reinforce possibilities and the steps necessary to build wealth in the face of national debt issues and high unemployment.

To that end, these free workshops are designed to provide teens with the opportunity to participate in interactive education programs that teach financial literacy, business concepts, and entrepreneurship skills.

“We want the next generation to take charge of their financial future,” said Marie Hall, Executive Director of BeMoneySmartUSA.  Supported by businesses like the California Lottery and Phoenix University, BeMoneySmartUSA offers workshops for teenagers ages 13-18 at minimal cost and the current series which runs through May 2011 is free.

Fifteen-year-old Matt (last name withheld for privacy) learned something about how important it is for kids to have the correct perspective about their personal finances.

“I loved this class, I learned to understand things about the economy that I didn’t know – I recognize that I have an opportunity as a young person to create my own financial destiny right now,” Matt said.
