"Beloved" is a 1998 movie inspired by the true story of Black slave Margaret Garner. It is based on the novel "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, according to the New York Times. The supernatural drama is directed by Jonathan Demme. It stars Oprah Winfrey, Danny glover, Kimberly Elise and Thandi Newton.

"Beloved" synopsis/plot

"Beloved" traces the life of Sethe, a former slave, who must deal with the after-effects of slavery. Having killed her own child in order to protect her from slave owners, Sethe deals with the wrath of a spirit named Beloved, whom she later discovers is her dead daughter.

"Beloved" is a horror movie based on historical facts. The real story occurred in 1856. That's when Margaret Garner, a Black slave who had escaped her captors, killed her own child in order to protect her from White slave owners. According to The Cincinnati Enquirer,

"As the party entered the room the mother was seen wielding a heavy shovel, and before she could be secured she inflicted a heavy blow with it upon the face of the infant, which was lying upon the floor."

Margaret Garner also struck a second child with the shovel and slit the throat of her daughter because she preferred to see her children dead rather than have them endure the cruel treatment of slaver holders.

The movie "Beloved" first aired in theaters but now airs on cable television.
