If you’ve followed the Denver Broncos over the past four decades, you certainly know the boisterous gray-bearded, cheerleading super fan, Tim McKernan, who wore nothing but a barrel and cowboy boots to all the Broncos games. McKernan died yesterday of lung failure. He was 69.
Rain or shine, blizzard or blistering winds, fans remember McKernan as the one who cheered the Broncos to six Super Bowl appearances during his “barrel” years. He started his unofficial Broncos mascot career in 1977, when is brother Scott gave him $10 to wear a barrel on TV.
McKernan retired his barrel in 2007 after thirty years on the job.
Hope the Broncos can win one for the Barrel man today. He will be sorely missed.
