According to a June 6 SBN report, weather conditions will be ideal for today’s 146th running of the Belmont Stakes, as lots of sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s are in the forecast. A total of 11 horses comprise this year’s field, but only one will be trying to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 (Affirmed).

On Wednesday, post positions for the 2014 Belmont Stakes were announced, with California Chrome drawing the second slot next to the rail. Since 1905, there have been only 11 Belmont Stakes winners from post position two, but given his speed and stamina, California Chrome will have a legitimate shot at history.

As reported by ESPN on June 6, the son of Lucky Pulpit will succeed where so many others have failed thanks to his state of mind. California Chrome has not only put himself in a great position for a Triple Crown title, but he’s also earned high praises from most experts in the horse racing world.

“He’s definitely a [physical] freak. You could see that way back when he showed up at the [Kentucky] Derby,” said Hall of Fame jockey Angel Cordero Jr. “But you can also see that he’s a smart horse, too. And I definitely believe it helps a racehorse – especially here – to have a great mind. Because things tend to happen at the Belmont that don’t happen at other places. Sometimes, there’s confusion, because at the three-quarters pole here, there’s still three-quarters of a mile to go, not a half-mile. Some of them have no idea where the wire is.”

As far as horse racing oddsmakers are concerned, all indications are that history will be made this evening in Elmont, N.Y. As we’ve seen all week, most betting lines around the world have California Chrome as the next Triple Crown winner.

Moments removed from the official 2014 Belmont Stakes post time, California Chrome is a 10/11 [-110] favorite above the rest of the field. Other notable names to look out for tonight include: Wicked Strong [9/2], Ride On Curlin [9/1], Commanding Curve [9/1], Tonalist [10/1] and others.
