The Belmar 5 Kid’s Races were finally held in Belmar, N.J. on Saturday, October 19, 2013 in Belmar, N.J. The races had to be postponed due to a storm on the originally scheduled date of July 12, 2013 the Friday before the Belmar 5 Race.
According to Penny Hinck of Monmouth Beach, N.J. who was one of the organizers from the Jersey Shore Running Club there were nearly 200 kids who participated in the races. They all received official yellow t-shirts to mark the occasion.
Kid’s from age 1 through 12 ran various distances and heats based on their age on a course laid on the beach. The kids made their way through the sand some in their shoes others ran barefoot.
Belmar 5 Race Director Phil Hinck of Monmouth Beach gave the participants instructions and the command to start each respective heat.
As the kids crossed the finish line they each were awarded a distinctive finisher's medal.
The Belmar Volunteer Fire Department was on hand to serve up post run hot dogs and a variety of other snacks. Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty was also on hand to cheer on the runners.
As soon as the sun went down and darkness overtook the beach everyone was treated to a fireworks display on the beach.
The races did go on – better late than never and everyone had a fun time.
