As summer rapidly approaches, individuals are scrambling to get their bodies shaped and trimmed for beach season. However, spending countless hours at the gym performing crunches and a variety of other countless abdomen exercises may not necessarily be the answer to shedding those unwanted pounds.
Here are some simple and effective workouts to blast away that belly fat in the comfort of your own home.
First, lie on your back with knees bent to 90-degree angles. Flatten your lower back against a yoga mat or towel, and straighten your arms at your side, pressing the backs of your shoulders against the mat. Inhale as you lower your toes toward the ground, and then exhale as you return to the starting position.
Do 5 to 8 reps.
Start on all fours. Keeping your back straight and your abs pulled in tight, drop down to your forearms and extend your legs behind you into a plank position.
Hold for 30 to 60 seconds.
As you hold, you should be resting on the balls of your feet and your forearms, keeping your back straight, elbows under your shoulders and your hips up. This workout will strengthen the deepest layer of abs, known as the traverse abdominals ⎯ giving your core a flat look.
Like with the toe dip, you’ll lie on your back with your knees bent to 90-degree angles. Straighten your arms by your sides and lengthen your fingertips. Focusing on the deep waist muscles, inhale while gradually moving your knees to the right, then exhale and return to the starting position. Repeat on the left ⎯ that’s 1 rep.
Do 5 to 8 reps.
Get into a pushup position, placing your forearms on a Swiss or exercise ball. Your elbows should be placed so that your arms and torso form a 90-degree angle, and your body should form a straight line from your shoulders to your ankles.
Next, contract your abs as if preparing for a punch in the gut.
Squeeze your glutes.
Hold this pose for 30 to 60 seconds while breathing deeply.
