New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg stepped a bit out of character Friday morning when he predicted that there could be riots in the streets if the federal government doesn’t “get serious” about creating jobs.
Mayor Bloomberg warned Friday there would be riots in the streets if Washington doesn't get serious about generating jobs.
"We have a lot of kids graduating college, can't find jobs," Bloomberg said on his weekly WOR radio show.
"That's what happened in Cairo. That's what happened in Madrid. You don't want those kinds of riots here."—New York Daily News
Quick to react was the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, which challenged Hizzoner to explain how law-abiding citizens should defend themselves, their homes and businesses when New York’s restrictive gun laws have left them essentially defenseless.
“Mayor Bloomberg is long on warnings, whether it’s about violence in the streets due to expanded concealed carry laws, increase gun ownership by law-abiding citizens, or a bleak economy for which he has offered no solutions, but expects big government to solve.”—CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb
One might ask what Bloomberg expects to gain by tossing out predictions of anarchy. Yes, the economy stinks, President Obama’s job performance is in the pits, his party – lest anyone forget – handed us the current economic stink bomb during its four years in charge on Capitol Hill, thanks to the un-stimulating “stimulus” package and “Obamacare,” and there does not appear to be much leadership on the landscape.
But forecasting riots is not going to compel anyone to produce a solution.
If chaos does erupt, how are law-abiding New Yorkers going to defend against the lawlessness? That’s a question Gottlieb asked. Bloomberg’s bent toward restrictive gun laws has left his constituents ill-equipped to fight back if the mobs are pounding at the front door.
“Unfortunately, Mayor Bloomberg’s solutions to violent crime are typically counter to common sense, so we shouldn’t expect too much in the way of economic wisdom, either. He would keep law-abiding citizens disarmed to prevent crime, so his response to rioting would probably be to arrest people who defend their homes and businesses.”—Alan Gottlieb
Bloomberg is a billionaire. He didn’t get that way in public office; he got that way in the private sector. That should tell him something. Government is not likely to solve a problem it created. Bloomberg – who calls himself a Republican while acting more like a Democrat – might take a moment to reflect on what another prominent Republican once stated: “Government is not the solution to our problems. Government is the problem.”
But Bloomy is hardly a Ronald Reagan. He’s not even Ronald McDonald. The Big Apple mayor, Gottlieb noted, is co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and he has been pre-occupied with making it harder, “if not impossible,” for law-abiding citizens to legally obtain firearms.
“Michael Bloomberg cannot have it both ways. If urban riots do erupt and innocent people are harmed, or lose their businesses and homes to rioters, he must accept part of the blame. His policies do not prevent victimization, they perpetuate it, and fomenting hysteria over the economy doesn’t help.”—Alan Gottlieb
It is one thing to harp about the economy, but another thing to offer serious solutions. Raising taxes is not a solution.
Likewise, it is easy to complain about violent crime, but another thing to stop it. Disarming the victims does not deter criminals, it just creates a safer working environment for them.
