The Belleville Board of Education heard public comment on the 2014-15 budget last Wednesday night on the $62.7 million budget approved by the board at evening's end.

The total operating budget totals $62,663,658. The tax levy, or amount to be raised through property taxes, was listed as $36,249,715, according to information handed out by the school board.

The board also approved the base budget of $1,388,928. Essex County school officials approved the budget, officials said.

The BOE votes were 5-0, with board trustees Joe Longo, who won an At-Large Township Council seat in May, and Bill Freda, who fell short of election, excused from the June meeting.

Last May, the Belleville Township Council voted to reduce the tax levy portion of the nearly $63 million 2013-14 school budget by $760,000, after the budget was defeated by voters in April.

The amount trimmed meant the average household tax increase dropped from about $270 to approximately $110, officials said.

The cuts were approved by the council after the Board of Education unanimously approved a resolution to accept that amount and not to appeal to the county to restore all or part of the amount.
