According to a May 17 report from MMA Mania, Bellator MMA is making its first attempt at a pay-per-view card with Bellator 120 from Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. Bellator 120, which features Quinton "Rampage" Jackson against King Mo Lawal in the main event, seemed doomed to fail, after Eddie Alvarez withdrew from his fight with Michael Chandler. That fight was supposed to be the Bellator 120 main event, so Alvarez going down was a major blow to the card.
However, it might have been a blessing in disguise. Now with Alvarez going down with an injury, MMA fans will have the chance to see what Michael Chandler is all about in a co-main collision with Will Brooks, and it'll hype up the trilogy fight against Alvarez even more. Bellator can save Chandler vs Alvarez III for its next attempt at a pay-per-view. As for the main event, Jackson vs Lawal is sure to be a barnburner with an explosive finish.
Both Jackson and Lawal have one-punch knockout power. Its safe to say this clash won't be going the distance. Bellator is hyping the fight as "MMA's biggest grudge match," but some fans have speculated that their feud is scripted. Even if Jackson and Lawal are best friends behind the scenes and their feud is completely fake, they are both professionals who know how to put on a great show for the fans. Jackson and Lawal are going to settle the score inside the cage at least to determine who the better fighter is.
In the co-main, Bellator 120 has Chandler taking on Brooks in a bout that will showcase two of the best lightweights on the planet. Chandler, 28, is a super talented fighter who is absolutely one of the best 10 lightweights in the world. Even though he's not fighting Alvarez, he's still a must-watch athlete. A great performance here by Chandler could get his name out into the mainstream and push him over the top as a true star in the realm of MMA.
The swing fight of the Bellator 120 card also features some familiar names, as former UFC star Tito Ortiz takes on Alexander Shlemenko. Ortiz, 39, hasn't fought in two years, but he'll be returning to action against a tough challenger in Shlemenko. Fighting Ortiz should be great for Shlemenko's career, as it could finally push him over the top as a fan favorite. In order to be a legend, you've got to beat a legend.
Shlemenko has 50 wins over the course of his career, but he hasn't beat very many familiar names. A win over Ortiz could be viewed as the biggest in his career. Also on the Bellator 120 card, Michael Page takes on Ricky Rainey at welterweight. Page is known for his bizarre fighting style, so he could also emerge from the event as a household name. Bellator 120: Jackson vs Lawal opens with a stacked preliminary card on Spike.com.
Bellator 120's main card goes live on pay-per-view at 9 p.m. Following Page and Rainey's fight, Alexander Volkov battles Blagoy Ivanov at heavyweight. Bellator 120 will absolutely be an exciting night of fights that casual and diehard MMA fans should enjoy. All 68 Dave and Busters locations are expected to air Bellator 120.
