Gino Velardi is not only a Colorado native, a Denver native, an award-winning fashion designer, but he is just one amazing guy. Personally, Gino is very genuine, kind, reserved and an visionary and LOVES to design clothes. Gino and I were able to have a very fun interview and instead of dictating the responses that Gino was supposed to give freely by giving the questions, we had a fun banter where Gino Velardi was able to color his interview. This is definitely the best interview that I have had so far and I have a new appreciation for Gino Velardi. I know you will, too. Let's have fun.
Of course, I began the interview with your almost normal, designer questions, such as, "What fabrics are your favorites for the fall and winter?" "Did you choose any particular colors that are your favorite?" And to be honest, as I was about to ask, "What was the inspiration for your line?" and I felt uninspired in that moment myself. I thought that if I was in Gino's shoes, what would I want. Wipe the slate clean and start fresh with a whole new vision. Yes! Here we go:
"Music has always been a big part of my creative process. I hear a song and I immediately think of a fashion show and what clothes I would design around that song. That fuels my creativity. This collection will be filled with luxury...the fabrics are rich and textured and major sparkle, and the designs are, and I always say, unapologetically sexy!
My clients are confident and beautiful women and that makes me create wonderful outfits for them. When I have a woman commission me to design her a dress or any piece of clothing, I work with them very closely and I feel like I give them a real couture experience. My passion is cocktail dresses and evening gowns, but I love the ready-to-wear items I have in this show. It's exciting for me. With every fashion show I push myself to do something different while keeping my signature style...and it works!"
I then asked Gino, in reference to one particular dress that will be runway ready tomorrow, "What music inspired you to design that dress?"
Gino, "Not a particular song. But I love the score for the Great Gatsby!"
Oh the colors I can see by just thinking of the Great Gatsby, much less how much more will come once I am listening to the score. The yellows, greens, royal blues and full-body work is beautiful. I believe again, that this is the best interview by far.
Oh, yes, this is exciting, this is fresh and new and Gino is just free to tell me just how much fashion moves him. The excitement, direction, focus; I can feel everything he is saying and it is as though I am at the drawing table with him and fingering through fabrics. I can imagine the experience of having a cocktail dress designed by Gino, shopping with him and having the feeling of being the object of this piece of art. This piece of art created just for me and I am the inspiration. Could this whole experience be true? Oh, yes.
Now, if by chance you may feel not as inspired as I, feel free to indulge yourself in Gino's work. Yes, tonight:
EXDO Event Center; 1399 35th Street; Denver. This event begins at 6:00 pm and fashion show begins at 7:30 pm. I am pretty sure that your mind will be changed and if you would like to be the artist's inspiration yourself, there will be a drawing for a free custom cocktail dress. Gino Velardi is one courageous artist and I am personally honored to know him.
Thank you, Gino.
