Being fully present

Can you think of situations, currently in your life, when you give your attention whole-heartily? I am talking about certain times when you are not multi-tasking, moments that devour you in a good way. Why might this be something of interest to you? Because if you are having a hard time coming up with these special scenarios, then I might challenge you that you are not living mindfully in the present moment.

We are all human, and of course, we think of the past (maybe regretfully at times) and the future (maybe with worry on occasion) but the more you can practice being fully present in the moments of your life, the better you will feel.

I recently passed a man walking his dog and as I watched his loyal, furry friend, I could feel its appreciation. This dog kept glimpsing at his owner and when they connected, his tail would wag with gratitude. It was precious. I got the feeling that the dog kept the owner present and I am sure, this connection benefited them both.

I often see this with grandparents. They may reflect the essence of “feeling old in general” but when his or her grandchild (especially a toddler) is present, this person lights up. He or she is energized and suddenly these precious moments wash away any aches and pain.

Think about these moments in your life, what gifts you with this type of bliss?

Once you can figure out what does this for you, practice owning this feeling and surfacing this awe-inspiring devotion during other times or activities in your life, things that may feel mundane.

Deepak Chopra offered this quote by Thick Nhat Hanh during his 21 days of inspiration and it touched me:

“Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if this activity is the axis on which the whole earth revolves. Live the moment. Only this actual moment is life.”

I want to ensure my life has these pockets of bliss instilled within, what about you? It really is mind over matter. Make your moments count!
