Max and Lubov Azria, the designers behind the Hervé Léger by Max Azria Fall 2013 show, are phenomenally talented and widely recognized in the fashion industry. It was an honor to attend their show and to have a recent Q&A opportunity with both of them via email. Below are their fascinating responses:
· What's your number one reason for getting into and staying in the fashion industry?
My number one reason [for entering] the industry was and still is my passion for art and design. I have always been interested in art. As far back as I can remember, I spent my time drawing and sketching clothing. The official start of my career was when I realized I needed to find a practical application for my creativity and my parents encouraged fashion design. It was the ideal way for me to create a career for myself that still incorporated art.
When it comes to this industry, I wouldn’t change anything – the journey that I have been blessed to experience cannot even begin to describe the full path that is yet to come. I have no regrets. And no matter the milestones I’ve experienced, I constantly embrace growth, learning, and creation every single day.
· What drew you to use the opulence of nature as an inspiration for your collection? How did you come upon Les Lalanné?
We began working with a neutral color scheme of tones such as light dove, steel and black with accents of forest green, navy and off white. For Fall, we wanted to create more dimension and texture with deep hues paired with elements moving into organic inspired shapes and details.
An avid art collector and addict, I came across Les Lalanné’s sculpted surreal animals and vegetation and was immediately inspired. They are unafraid of mixing different elements of reality, nature and a sense of imagination into their works of art.
· Who are your fashion icons of the moment?
I’m currently obsessed with Jane Birkin, although, it’s not one woman in particular who inspires me. I’ve always admired strong women who are confident and know what they want; women who aren’t afraid to speak their mind and stand up for themselves. The inner strength of a woman is her truest beauty.
· What trends are you excited about seeing women wear more frequently in the Spring/Summer and the Fall/Winter?
For Hervé Léger specifically, we are excited to see our customer in more versatile sportswear pieces with a rock and roll, urban edge in every season.
· Any other projects/partnerships you're working on in the near future?
We have our BCBGMAXAZRIA 25th Anniversary coming up, so we are planning for that and excited to celebrate in a big way!
