In just a few months, pure evil will descend upon San Antonio, as a Decibel-sponsored tour will be making a stop through our fair city with four bands that threaten the very fabric of light itself. Polish blackened death metal titans Behemoth are touring with none other than Sweden’s Watain, a monstrous double-bill that should be considered mandatory for any and all metalheads in the area. Rounding out the bill will be occult rockers The Devil’s Blood - worthy successors to the throne of darkness and death - and old-school heavy metal revivalists In Solitude, making this tour one of the best we’ve seen in recent months. Say what you will about Behemoth (those who prefer their black metal period, we’re looking at you - not that we blame you), but this is a massive tour with zero metalcore, zero keyboard-drenched “symphonic black metal”, and zero “post-black metal” nonsense about it, which is quite an admirable undertaking in itself.
The tour hits the White Rabbit (2410 N. St. Mary’s St.) on Sunday, April 29th. Be there or miss out on what could be one of the best shows of the year. Having witnessed Watain twice, this reporter can testify that a Watain ritual is worth the price of admission - although being genuine in their craft, Watain are no mere showmen in the name of entertainment, as the band are legitimate practitioners of all that is the glory of black metal. If this reporter is correct, this is also The Devil’s Blood’s first tour of the States, and while they lack the extremity of Behemoth and Watain, they certainly get the job done with catchy, hook-laden classic rock riffs and powerful female vocals that recall a banshee ripped straight from Hell. Ultimately, you can’t go wrong with this tour package, so mark your calendars - this is gonna be a big one!
