Beer Review: Roebling Porter by Rivertown Brewing

See also

Rivertown Brewing in Lockland, Ohio has many good beers with a wide range of flavors and styles. From German style lagers, sours, ales and deep porters, Rivertown has something for everyone. They are a growing local favorite.

The Roebling Porter is a Vanilla Espresso Imperial Robust Porter. That's quite a mouthful of a name and the porter lives up to it. Made with vanilla beans and cold pressed coffee. The pour is thick and luscious with a medium brown head. Even cold, the vanilla aromas are noticeable during the pour.

On the nose, vanilla and coffee dance about. As the beer gets warmer, the chocolate notes come up as well. At proper temperature, the aromas are well balanced.

In the mouth, the thickness of the beer is one of the first things noticed. This is a bit of a chewy beer. Given then blending of all these flavors, it is no wonder it is a bit chewy. The vanilla, coffee and chocolate arrive nearly simultaneously and again, the blend is well balanced.

Food pairings

This beer could be enjoyed with food, though the temptation is for a dessert beer. Should it be paired with an appetizer, stick to light foods and perhaps some mild spice. With the stronger pairings, a simple one is to make a float with the beer. Vanilla or chocolate ice cream may overpower the coffee flavors, though a raspberry sherbert would make a good float. A light, fluffy cheesecake with a graham cracker crust and a fruit overlay makes an awesome pairing.
