Beer and dumplings, plus more than half off a 4-course paella tasting

Dumplings and beer make a tasty pairing

Italy has its ravioli and tortellini, Russia its pelmeni, Japan its shumai. By whatever name you call them, bundles of pasta stuffed with a meat, seafood, or vegetable filling make for good eating, especially when accompanied by a frosty beer.

That's how the delectable little fellas will be served on Thursday, July 22, when dumpling guru Wai Hon Chu (co-author of The Dumpling: A Seasonal Guide, William Morrow) teams

up with beer mavens Kelly Taylor (of Kelso, in Brooklyn) and Spencer Niebuhr (of Southampton Publick House) to share ideas on Chinese dumpling and artisanal beer pairings.

The menu will include six variations on the dumpling theme—vegetable potstickers, small mushroom buns, wontons in red chili oil; translucent shrimp dumplings, leaf-wrapped rice packages stuffed with chicken and bamboo Shoots, peanut-coconut rice dumplings—and beers selected to accentuate the nuances of each nibble.

The event, which will run from 7 to 9 p.m., is presented by Edible Manhattan in conjunction with “Good Beer Month.” Tickets are $40 per head and will take place at Whole Foods Market Bowery, 95 E. Houston Street.

The Spanish restaurant La Paella, meantime, is running a promotional tasting menu for the next week that includes 3 courses plus a glass of sangria or beer. (In a slightly deceptive maneuver, the Dealist, which is running the promotion, describes it as a 4-course menu, with the beverage subbing for one of the courses.) The meal, which includes a tapas, gazpacho or a salad, and one of five paellas, is normally $54, discounted for the next seven days to $25. For what it's worth, La Paella also features an attractive 3-course early bird menu from 5 to 7 p.m. that includes a beer or glass of sangria for $16.95. La Paella is located at 214 E. 9th Street (at Third Avenue), 212-598-4321.
